Where to Fall in Love in Brooklyn in Winter (Because Winter is Coming)
Make some winter memories at these four Brooklyn bars
You know what I hate? Being cold. It’s the worst. While everyone is busy complaining all summer about the heat and how expensive air conditioning is, I’m shouting to the goddesses to make it last. Unfortunately, winter is inevitable, and with it, I’m told, comes cuffing season. If you’ve managed to find a babe you find both attractive AND smart, hold onto her and consider making some winter memories in these four Brooklyn bars.
ROEBLING TEA ROOM: Let the Candlelight Warm Your Faces as You Watch the Snow Falling on Williamsburg’s Sidewalks
Full disclosure: I fell in love here once. Ok, it wasn’t love, more like the idea of love, but that counts, right? Anyway, Roebling Tea Room is superb for many reasons. The space is inviting, the food is delicious, and the giant rectangular bar works for both casual drinks or a real dinner. In fact, I actually prefer the bar over tables. Once you head inside, find a seat facing the giant windows, order a New Age Traveler (Bourbon | Early Grey | Lemon), and let the candlelight warm your faces as you watch the snow falling on Williamsburg’s sidewalks. There is something magical about witnessing winter from their bar stools. Trust me, I know from experience.
HENRY PUBLIC: On a Tree-Lined Street (So Your Babe is Already Impressed)
I’m no good at keeping my own secrets so I have to admit, I only found out about this place because the girl from Roebling took me there. I know, I know, but she had good taste! Henry Public is located in Cobble Hill on a tree lined street so your babe is already impressed. Bartenders wear button-ups and bowties and pour speakeasy drinks in a cozy old New York atmosphere. I would go with the Oddfellow (Rum | Lime | Grapefruit | Maraschino | House Bark | Root Syrup) or Eagle’s Dream (Gin | Lemon | Sugar | Egg White |Creme de Violette). I’ve been on a few dates here and even when I wasn’t into the person we both still left happy, so that’s really saying something. If you’re past the point of trying to impress and have no problem eating to your heart’s content, definitely order the turkey leg sandwich with a side of mayonnaise for the fries. You can thank me later.
TABARE: The Romantic Getaway You’re Always Hoping to Take but New York Won’t Let You Afford
No weird fake love situation here! I found this one all on my own and the first time I went I was with a friend. Immediately I realized this was a mistake. Tabaré is extremely intimate with somewhere around 30 seats, wooden planked walls, and ultra warm lighting. It’s like the romantic getaway you’re always hoping to take but New York won’t let you afford. The Uruguayan inspired menu is comforting enough to make you feel as if you’re with someone you could spend every holiday without making you feel too heavy. Winter equates to red wine so I would certainly suggest grabbing a glass while lounging on their long wooden benches. To be honest with you I wish I was falling in love there now.
MILK AND ROSES: Kiss Sweetly Over Glasses of Wine, Bowls of Pasta, and then Huddle Close as you Find your Way Back to the G train
This one is a little different considering I’ve never experienced it at night but it doesn’t matter because this place is definitely amazing at any hour. Greenpoint’s Milk and Roses offers a full breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks, and free wifi so you can fall in love anywhere from 10 am to midnight. Bring your laptop during the day and geek out over your honey’s intellectual prowess while you both write your next greatest piece. Later, while sprawled out on their couches in what feels like a classic library, you can kiss sweetly over glasses of wine, bowls of pasta, and then huddle close as you find your way back to the G train.
